The Storied Boutique Hotel in Saint-Germain District Was James Baldwin’s Creative Retreat
Sheila Donnelly & Associates (SDA) is now the agency of record for a new international luxury client, The Hotel Verneuil Saint-Germain on Parisʻ famed Left Bank. The hotel and its website (en.hotel-verneuil-saint-germain.com<http://en.hotel-verneuil-saint-germain.com> <http://en.hotel-verneuil-saint-germain.com/>) have been completely redesigned and refreshed, now featuring fully renovated rooms, air conditioning on all floors, larger bedding, showers, flat screen TVs, free wifi throughout the hotel and a clean, up-to-date, multilingual website.
Once the creative retreat for writer James Baldwin and other notable artists, Hotel Verneuil Saint-Germain is tucked in a small 17th century building on a quiet street in Saint-Germain des Prés at the heart of Paris. The street maintains a delightful walking ambiance; architecturally charming shops, cafes, art galleries and restaurants, the Seine two blocks away and the Louvre across the river. Inside, exposed wood beams line many of the guest rooms and baths, trompe l'oeil cover the ceilings, and public spaces feature design touches by owner Nicolas Nonon. Even the elevator is lined in patterned tapestry. Breakfast is served in a vaulted stone cellar or in room.
“My life, in my own eyes, began during that first year in Paris,” wrote author James Baldwin about his time at the Hotel de Verneuil from 1948-49. It was here that he refined his voice as a writer and stoked his passion for life in cafes and the radicalism of the Left Bank.
