PALM SPRINGS PUBLIC ART FRAMES THE CITY

02-06-2008

Palm Springs, CA — Twenty-nine pieces of beautiful, unusual, startling, and thought-provoking make up the City of Palm Spring’s public art collection located throughout the City. The latest piece, Jungle Red, was added in late January and is located in the Warm Sands Neighborhood just off Ramon Road, a prime Palm Springs site. Made of fabricated steel and finished with bright red enamel paint, local artist Delos Van Earl named the piece after the nail polish color made famous in the 1939 Joan Crawford film The Woman.

Van Earl’s career spans more than 35 years.  The youngest of five children from a Northern California logging town, Van Earl graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from Mills College in Oakland, California. In 1987, he moved with his wife to the Coachella Valley from Northern California.  Van Earl’s work is in prominent corporate and private collections. He is also represented by galleries nationally.

“This piece is from my “Luna Series,” which is based on linear form and movement.  “Jungle Red” is a subterranean piece,” Van Earl said.  “The sculpture moves in and out of the ground, juxtaposing the linear line against the sky and the imaginary line beneath the ground. In this particular piece, the size, scale, form and mass reel an imaginary setup environment which is visual and interactive at the same time.  “Jungle Red” is meant to be experienced from several different viewpoints, while driving by at a distance, walking within the giant spiral or standing inside the arches. I hope this work becomes a Palm Springs landmark that is a favorite site for visitors and residents of the community.”
