The Arts come South for the Winter

 

Aiken, South Carolina has long been known as “The Winter Colony,” a charming and temperate environment in which elite New York City society of the last century continued its equestrian pursuits during the cold winter months up north.  Names like Astor, Vanderbilt and Whitney were as prominent in Aiken as they were in New York, and patronage of the arts and culture was a year-round endeavor.
 
In a full-circle, one-of-a-kind event, The Juilliard School continues this historic relationship by bringing the country’s artistic elite from its home in New York for a week’s residence in Aiken this coming mid-March.  As America’s premier performing arts conservatory, Juilliard prepares exceptional students for professional life in dance, drama, and music.   From Saturday, March 9 through Friday, March 15, 2013, this special visit will feature public performances, master classes, chamber concerts, and outreach to local Aiken schools.
