Luxury Hotels Offer Some Irresistible Indulgences

Hot. Iced. Spiked. Shaven.

No matter how it’s taken, there’s no arguing that chocolate has been sexy for centuries. The following highlights from some of the world’s most decadent hotels aim to inspire everyone’s inner Willy Wonka.

InterContinental Berchtesgaden, www.intercontinental.com

InterContinental Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps recently launched a new Chocolate Spa Suite at its Mountain Spa. The brainchild of the hotel’s spa and recreation director Peter Droessel, nearly all the treatment ingredients are edible, and as an extra indulgence, guests also receive chocolate specialties from the patisserie, including homemade pralines and cakes.

One especially popular offering begins with a sumptuous chocolate mousse of fine dark chocolate and coconut applied to the body, followed by a crême de cacao and white chocolate flake body mask and moisturizing “body fondue” of hot chocolate sauce combined with melted cocoa butter, fresh cream and warm olive oil. The treatment concludes with a full body massage with espresso truffle oil or stimulating chocolate and sweet orange oil. Hot chocolate with cream or an Amaretto choco-presso with orange liqueur is served directly following the treatment.

Hôtel de la Cité, www.hoteldelacite.com

Hôtel de la Cité is known for its legendary Pastry Chef Regis Chanel’s handmade chocolate creations. Chanel’s chocolates far surpass the standard turndown nibble; they are exquisitely hand painted with images depicting the hotel and countryside. Chef Chanel has also been known to create ornate castles out of chocolate to be delivered to guest rooms on request. Located in Europe's largest fortified medieval city (Carcassonne, France), the hotel also regularly hosts grand medieval banquets and tournaments, regional wine tastings and luxury barge trips on the Canal du Midi.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, www.ritzcarlton.com

The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Amelia Island offers a Chocolate Mousse Hydrating Facial, which provides vitamins, antioxidants, and enriching chocolate cocoa, almond, jojoba and macadamia oils to rejuvenate. For an even more indulgent treat, the Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap begins with an antioxidant sugar scrub to smooth away dryness, then envelops the skin with an antioxidant icing of the finest cocoa and nutritious active ingredients. And to allow the skin to absorb lasting moisture, a relaxing scalp massage is the “cherry on the sundae” so to speak. Both treatments use Hungarian Eminence Organic Skin Care products, which are handmade weekly in small batches using Hungarian cocoa (known for its extraordinary moisturizing qualities) and other ingredients rich in 52 vitamins and minerals to ensure maximum results.

Maroma Resort & Spa, www.maromahotel.com

Kinan Spa offers a unique choco-therapy for couples only. The Aphrodisia’s Chocolate Invigoration starts with a pure cocoa full body exfoliation. After gently brushing off the tasty remnants, the skin is massaged using fine warm chocolate, before being cocooned to absorb the heat and healing properties. During the wrap, the face is lightly exfoliated with a sugar and geranium scrub, and then a café mocha mask is applied. The treatment winds down with a lovers’ bath (or shower) and is finished with a therapeutic application of 100% pure chocolate and coconut oil.
