(Beijing, October 21, 2013) – The Opposite House is showcasing artist Ma Han's unique ‘Pink Collar’ installation in its atrium through December 30, 2013.
Han, who has observed the social class system for over a decade, has translated social class into his work by using different shirt color codes: blue, white, black, and, for this 300-piece installation, for The Opposite House, the pink collar class. Han views the color pink as the emergence of a more ambiguous class in the fashionable consumerism world; beautiful and gorgeous. The ‘Pink Collar’ installation also aims to promote October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Han’s flying white shirts installation first appeared in the ‘Long March’ exhibition in Beijing followed by the Tokyo Gallery in Beijing 798 Art Zone, the Western Academy of Beijing, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center and the Guangzhou Grand Theater. The floating white shirts installation symbolizes white-collar workers, full of dreams, but without any roots.
“We are delighted to host Ma’s installation - a simple yet stunning piece, in scale and design. It echoes the two suspended mesh pieces and complements our atrium perfectly,” says Peter Wynne, area general manager of Swire Hotels, Beijing.
Born in Hunan province, Han graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of the China National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou. His work has been exhibited widely in France, Italy, New York, Dubai and Beijing. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
