National Museum of American Jewish History collection's Menorah Used in White House Hanukkah Celebration

12-05-2013

Philadelphia, PA (December 5, 2013) - The White House is using a menorah from the collection of the National Museum of American Jewish History in its Hanukkahcelebration this year. The unique menorah was created by artist Manfred Anson, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1939 as one of 20 boys rescued by the Jewish Welfare Guardian Society of Australia, and immigrated to New York City in 1963 to join his sister.

In honor of his new home and of the iconic Statue of Liberty's 1986 centennial, Anson created a menorah with branches topped by miniature Statues of Liberty. The statuettes were cast from a Statue of Liberty souvenir that Anson, an avid collector of Americana, had acquired.  Important events in Jewish history -- ranging from the Exodus from Egypt to the Founding of Israel in 1948 -- are inscribed on the base of each statuette. Anson passed away last year at the age of 89.

The Menorah will be back on display at the Museum on December 20.
