Excelsior Christmas Tree
(Beijing, December 16, 2013) – The Opposite House is pleased to present a special Christmas installation designed by Gautier Chiarini, on display until December 31, 2013 in our living room.
The “non-tree” Christmas tree is 12ft high and made out of 58 porcelain Excelsior chairs from Gautier’s “China’s Space Age” series. The Christmas tree includes Dongfanghong and Persiflyer chairs, and the Excelsior stool made of steel, solid elm and porcelain. In Gautier’s opinion, China’s history of space exploration affirms its greatness and fascinating “spacetime.” Among the few spacefaring nations, Gautier believes that China has the biggest chances to land on Mars first. That is where this series of the three chairs draws its inspiration from.
After completing a master’s degree in International Relations in Geneva in 2003, Gautier worked for the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs for about six years, first as an adviser in the political section and then as head of the cultural section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing. His passion for Chinese art and design led him to make a career move in 2011. Today, Gautier designs exquisite chairs in China and divides his time between Beijing and Montreux, Switzerland.
“It’s delightful to continue our evergreen Christmas non-tree tree tradition with Gautier’s unique yet stunning rocket chair installation, it’s a good way for us to be supportive of the local Chinese arts scene, while giving a nod to one of the most important Western traditions,” says Peter Wynne, Area General Manager for Swire Hotels in Beijing.
