New York - January 30, 2014: Inkaterra Hotels, Peru's leading sustainable tourism company since 1975, has announced the launch of its new multi-day 'Birdwatching Experiences' at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica and Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. Located in the Peruvian Amazon and the cloud forest at the base of Machu Picchu Mountain respectively, the four-day, three-night itineraries focus on each region's rare and exotic ornithological offerings, along with cultural and historical sites.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates there are currently more than 51 million birders in the United States alone. Operating in a country with one of the largest collections of birds in the world, Inkaterra seeks to tap into this growing niche segment of bird aficionados by introducing a formal way to travel the country while celebrating Peruvian birds.

"Peru is one of the most bio-diverse and geographically varied countries in the world," says Jose Koechlin, CEO & Founder of Inkaterra Hotels. "With a massive range of habitats for hundreds of bird species, birdwatching is quickly becoming one of the most popular and eco-friendly activities our country has to offer."

This trend has grown with the popularity of Peru's Birding Rally Challengecompetition (headed by NGO, Inka Terra Association (ITA)), which launched in December 2012. Since then, two additional birding rally competitions have been held throughout the country, drawing international birding teams from the U.S., South Africa, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Spain, and Brazil.

The new 'Birdwatching Experiences' are designed with both novice and expert birders in mind and combine private guided tours with each hotel's existing a la carte excursions.

Highlights of the Birdwatching Experience at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica include:

  • 540 bird species including oropendolas, caciques, flycatchers, the prehistoric-looking hoatzin, pale-winged trumpeter, pavonnine quetzal, manakins, antbirds and red-bellied macaws
  • Private visit and birdwatching on Valencia Lake, subject to weather conditions and applicable only between November and June; could be replaced by a private ornithology tour in the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica's surroundings.
  • Guided walk through the property's jungle trail system, Canopy Walk (90 feet above the forest floor) and Anaconda Walk.

Starting from US1,041 per adult
