WHAT:  Three unique, back-to-back itineraries centered on an epic 12-day exploration of India’s ultimate safari offerings. 

 

WHERE:  This Asia safari starts in India and explores the wild places in Sri Lanka and Nepal.

After an acclimation day of Delhi sightseeing, we will head to Satpura Tiger Reserve in central India. This lesser-known national park is probably the best-kept secret within India’s varied portfolio of wildlife reserves. It offers an diversity of wildlife-viewing activities from walking and game drives to boating and canoeing, along with the most consistent sloth bear sightings in Asia and a high quality safari experience at Forsyth Lodge.

 

From Satpura we progress onto the tiger mecca of Kanha, where we will be staying in India’s top safari lodge. Banjaar Tola luxury tented camp overlooks the tranquil Banjaar River and sightings of tiger and dhole (Indian wild dogs) are not uncommon from the lodge itself. A joint venture between &Beyond and the luxurious Taj Hotels group, Banjaar Tola has rapidly garnered a reputation as the safari leader in the Indian context.

 

After four days and nights at Banjaar Tola, the Indian safari culminates with a two-night visit to Agra and the iconic Taj Mahal. Staying at the Oberoi Amarvilas will afford us the opportunity to enjoy a sundowner while watching the sun sink over the world’s most spectacular monument to love, bringing down the curtain on a truly memorable Indian safari experience.

 

The week ahead will bring a journey to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan safari leg will make use of the elegant and adventurous tented camps of Leopard Trails, secluded deep within the Wilpattu and Yala national parks. The country’s two premier parks are renowned for their great elephant viewing, while Yala has the highest density of leopards to be found anywhere in the world. Missed out on this elusive cat in Africa? This Sri Lankan add-on safari may be the perfect antidote.

 

Passage’s third and final Asiatic adventure involves a safari sojourn to the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. Following on from India, the nine-day Nepal itinerary is split between Chitwan and Bardia tiger reserves with a day of sightseeing and shopping in friendly Kathmandu. While both the Nepali reserves are home to healthy tiger populations, it is the Indian one-horned rhino that is the star of the show here. Chitwan boasts a staggering density of these endangered, prehistoric-looking creatures, while Bardia offers a stunning tract of off-the-beaten-track wilderness.

 

Bardia is a wild place and a personal favorite of mine. Tiger Top’s Karnali Lodge affords us the opportunity to explore this wildlife-rich reserve on elephant-back, on foot, by boat or in a vehicle. Here the animals are wilder, the people fewer and with a little luck we might have the place virtually to ourselves: a rare treat in Asia. Bardia is as close to the quintessential African safari experience as you’ll get in Asia.
