West Chester, Pennsylvania, August 21, 2014 - The Cradle of Rotary Wing Aviation exhibit at the American Helicopter Museum explains why everywhere you go in the Philadelphia and Southeastern PA region, you will find pioneers and places related to the development of the helicopter. The American Helicopter Museum’s RotorFest 2014, the annual, only all-helicopter air show in the US, is scheduled for October 11th and 12th from 10am – 4:30pm at the American Helicopter Museum, 1220 American Blvd., West Chester, PA.
Since 1928, when Harold Pitcairn, for the first time in the United States, flew a rotary wing aircraft at his Bryn Athn, PA estate, a journey of technological innovation ensued in dozens of locations. The stories of rotary wing pioneers like Harold Pitcairn, Haviland Platt and Lawrence LePage, Wallace & Rod Kellett, E. Burke Wilford, Gerard Herrick and Ralph McClarren, Drago Jovanovich, Frank Piasecki, Arthur Young and many more still resonate in neighborhoods of the region.
The permanent exhibit, Cradle of Rotary Wing Aviation, recounts historic ideas conceived by these men in creation of mankind’s most versatile flying machine which can fly in every direction – up, down, sideways, forward and backward and most importantly, the helicopter can hover.
James Chiles in The God Machine aptly states, “History has known few more inventive minds than those responsible for the helicopter, mankind’s most versatile flying machine.”
Exhibit visitors learn of the trial and error and the bold innovative designs that transformed aviation usefulness across the globe. Helicopters are now essential in rescue and military missions, medical evacuation, firefighting and corporate transportation.
Growing out of the long history of helicopter icons, as indicated in the exhibit, manufacturing giants Boeing Helicopters, Sikorsky Global Helicopter and Agusta Westland continue the tradition today designing and producing helicopters for commercial, corporate and military use in Southeastern PA (the Philadelphia region).
Celebrating this unique heritage, RotorFest 2014 will feature a special tribute to helicopter soldiers in the PA National Guard who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, the US Army Golden Knights 16 person parachute team from Ft. Bragg, NC, the original Bat Mobile and Bat Copter flying show and Sky Soldiers Huey/Cobra Vietnam Rescue re-enactment complete with “enemy attackers.”

ABOUT:
The American Helicopter Museum, (www.americanhelicopter.museum) a 20,000-square-foot hangar full of 70 years of vintage helicopters, is a dream destination with its mission to preserve, educate and inspire interest in the history, science and technology of helicopters. The only V-22 tilt-rotor Osprey in the world that’s on public display is a highlight but visitors may also climb into some of the helicopters to fiddle with dials, switches, and pedals, imagining piloting your own flight to far-off places. The museum has many exhibits on how copters actually work and how they differ from fixed-wing aircraft. There are also films about the helicopters commercial and military purposes as well as demonstrations of what may be in the future for the rotorcraft industry.
