The Oxford Experience Offers Courses at Prestigious Christ Church

 

Oxford, England, January 6, 2015—The Oxford Experience, a residential program designed for anyone who would enjoy a one-week course at Oxford, will take place this summer at Christ Church, one of the most prestigious and beautiful of Oxford colleges. Anglophiles from all over the globe gather for a week of study and fun during the program’s six-week term, July 5 to August 15.  There are no requirements, no exams and no papers to write. Summertime Oxford students gather memories to last a lifetime: Passing beneath Christopher Wren’s Tom Tower, named for Cardinal Wolsey who founded the college in 1525; dining on High Table in the Tudor hall made famous by the Harry Potter films; or sipping champagne in the Masters’ Garden in the golden light of an English summer evening.  They stay in comfortable lodgings in dormitories where poets and prime ministers once lived.

 

The courses cover some 60 subjects as varied as The Georgian Home, Great Families of Britain, Napoleon, Creative Writing, Foundations of Modern Political Thought, Political Philosophy, Francis ! of France, The Ballets Russes, Cotswold Towns,, Jane Austen’s People in Their Places, Queens of Ancient Egypt, The 18^th Century English Landscape Garden and Ireland’s Troubled Past.

 

Three meals daily are included in the program: a full English breakfast, a buffet lunch, and a served three-course dinner, which (surprise!) participants call “delicious.”  One night during the week each student is invited to dine on High Table, where wine is served with dinner, and on the final night there’s a gala dinner in the Hall..  After dinner there are pub walks, whisky tastings, lectures, performances by traditional Morris Dancers and Evensong in the college chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral.

 

Classes are held in the morning, with a break for coffee and tea in the Junior Commons Room.  In the afternoon there are tours of Christ Church and the city of Oxford.  And on the Thursday, most courses include excursions to stately homes, cathedrals, museums and such.

 

An Oxford Experience week costs $1,931 in U.S. dollars, $2,276 in Canadian, which covers tuition, accommodations, evening entertainment, a welcome reception and all meals.
