2008 Calendar of Events

 

Cooperstown may be known as home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, but many who make the pilgrimage also discover an unspoiled repository of America’s heritage, rich in history, art, architecture and natural beauty. 2008 Cooperstown event highlights include: the “Gustav Stickley: The Enlightened Home;” exhibit at the Fenimore Art Museum; the return of the “Ice Cream: Our Cool Obsession” exhibit at The Farmers’ Museum; the annual Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend featuring the induction of baseball legend Rich “Goose” Gossage; an exciting season at the Glimmerglass Opera, featuring four mainstage premieres: Kiss Me Kate, Giulio Cesarein Egitto, Das Liebesverbot (in its first American staged production), and Capuleti e i Montecchi;.  At all times of the year, Cooperstown will continue to offer a slice of Americana at its finest.

Leatherstocking Golf Course

Cross Country Skiing – Cross country skiing on the scenic grounds of the Leatherstocking Golf Course and Otsego Lake groomed trails. Ski and snow shoe rentals available from the Mount Otsego ski shop.

The Farmers’ Museum

Evening at The Tavern – Enjoy a truly unique dining experience featuring a four-course candlelit meal, period music and games, and old-fashioned hospitality in The Farmers’ Museum’s historic Bump Tavern. The menu is designed around offerings traditional to rural 19th-century New York taverns.

Sugaring Off Sundays – This end-of-winter celebration features activities that explore time-honored traditions of the maple sugar industry. Guests can learn about the maple sugaring process through ongoing demonstrations and enjoy a breakfast that features pancakes, Otsego County maple syrup, home fries, eggs, and beverages. Breakfast 8:30 am – 1pm; maple sugaring activities 9am – 2pm.

The Otesaga Resort Hotel

Grand Season Opening – The Otesaga, for nearly a century one of the country’s premier seasonal resorts, opens for its 99th season on April 24, 2008.  This 136-room Grand Dame Resort, a magnificent, Federal-style structure with an imposing front portico supported by massive 30-foot columns, occupies 700 feet of lakefront on the southern shore of Lake Otsego.

The Fenimore Art Museum

Season Opening – The Fenimore Art Museum opens for the 2008 season with new exhibitions including: Rural Icons: Photographs by Richard Walker; Gustav Stickley: The Enlightened Home; Gilded Lions and Jeweled Horses: The Synagogue to the Carousel; Through The Eyes of Others: African Americans in American Art; Earl Cunningham’s America; Remembering Cooperstown: photographs by Smith and Telfer; and Presidential Folk Art.

The Fenimore Art Museum

Exhibit Opening: Gustav Stickley: The Enlightened Home: The Fenimore Art Museum presents an exhibition on the furniture of celebrated turn-of-the-century designer and manufacturer and leading spokesman for the American Arts and Crafts Movement, Gustav Stickley. Gustav Stickley: The Enlightened Home features 40 pieces of original Stickley furniture and decorative objects.  The exhibition explores Stickley’s well-designed and carefully crafted furniture within the context of his philosophical contribution to the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Leatherstocking Golf Course

Season Opening – Designed by Devereux Emmet in 1909, the championship 18-hole, par-72, 6,324-yard course is open to the public as well as guests of The Otesaga Resort Hotel and The Cooper Inn. The course was named one of the ten best public courses in New York State by GolfWeek, and was included on Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 100 Golf Resorts List of 2005. [Back to Press Releases Main]
