Skip Provence deja vu. That’s so last year – “been there, done that.” Next time, why not explore the quirkier side of Provence, the places less crowded? We’ve been traveling to Provence for a number of years, visiting off-the-beaten-path places, eating in small family-run bistros and tasting wines in tucked-away vineyards. Here are 10 things that we recommend, all of which offer a chance to experience the fun, frivolous and fascinating side of Provence. Several are included in our own Provence Escapes tours (www.ProvenceEscapes.com). * Musée du Tire Bouchon (The Corkscrew Museum). Unhappily for the French, known for their fine wines, the origin of the corkscrew is English, developed by them for extracting the corks from bottles of cider and beer. Nonetheless, in true Gallic egalitarian spirit, Yves Rousset-Rouard, owner of the Domaine de la Citadelle winery just outside Ménerbes, has collected over 1,000 corkscrews from all over the world ranges from the 17th century to today and put them in this quirky museum. Monsieur Rousset-Rouard’s vast collection dates from the earliest simple T-shaped screw pull design to the latest in fanciful contraptions, perhaps more elegant than practical, although among the elegant are jewelers’ beautiful works of art. One ironic corkscrew is a caricature of Andrew Volstead, the congressman credited with championing the bill that created Prohibition, made booze illegal and enabled the rapid growth and power of “the mob” and its renowned gangsters.
