Quebec City’s Coolest Hotel By Rich Steck & Judi Janofsky At the end of a full morning traipsing around knee-high snow mounds to enjoy the outdoor excitement of Quebec City’s famed Winter Carnival – plus the sweet delights of several “beaver tails” (cinnamon sugar crusted flat fried waffles) and a big bowl of rabbit stew – all I wanted was a nap in the warmth of a heated room and a cozy bed. So of course off we went to the Ice Hotel. That’s right, a hotel built entirely of ice, 15,000 tons of it. After a 20-minute bus ride to the outskirts of Quebec City, we channeled the thrill Dorothy and her pals must have felt at their first glance of the Emerald City in Oz. Well, not quite. From the outside, the Ice Hotel was mostly a big white mound of snow-encrusted ice, opaque instead of the diamond-like translucence we had expected. But the entrance did at least meet our expectations: tall columns of big ice bricks supporting an arched ceiling that led to the grand foyer and its 400-pound chandelier’s ice crystals shimmering like they were carved by Svorsky’s own craftspeople. Melt free since the hotel’s interior temperature is kept at a constant 16-23 degrees Fahrenheit.
To the right, past the ice fashioned reception desk, was a chapel, filled at this hour by a wedding ceremony – understandingly brief, since it’s hard for a bride to look alluring wearing a pale blue off-the-shoulder gown with matching goose bumps. The corridor passing the chapel led to the 32 guest rooms, each with king size beds (actually ice risers topped with what seemed to be a straw-filled waterproof pad and twin-size sleeping bags which could be zipped together, transforming the room into a honeymoon suite). Some of the rooms had stand-alone fireplace stoves, Gas fired and cleverly designed to throw off no heat – cozy symbolism without the danger of melting the room. All of the rooms had large and marvelous bas relief carvings on the walls (actually, in the walls) and animal skins on the low ledges which served as sitting places.
