Belize is Quite a Catch for Fisherman of Every Level

Belize City, Belize, March 26, 2008Belize is a world-class fishing destination that prides itself on its wonderful habitat under the sea.  Its crystal waters are a virtual playground for a wide variety of species and paradise for those that enjoy the sport of fishing. The best part is that no matter the skill level, there is a Belize fishing adventure tailored for just about anyone.

The following are just a few of the many reasons why Belize is a great destination for those looking for a casting adventure.

The Flats

The flats of Belize remain the big draw for fishermen, especially those that enjoy fly fishing.  These areas are chock-full of bonefish, permit and tarpon.  In fact, Belize features more than 200 square miles of classic tarpon flats.  Tarpon average 50 pounds in the winter and over 120 pounds in the summer, making it quite a catch!  Some of the best areas include Amergris Caye, Turneffe Island atoll, Grover’s Reef atoll, Placencia and Tobacco Caye.

Reef and Offshore

Anglers are in their glory when they visit Belize’s shores and reef with a selection of yellowtail, kingfish, wahoo, snapper, grouper, blue marlin, billfish, among others.  Full and half-day expeditions and charters are available all over the country.  For the more serious fisherman, many tournaments are run throughout the year including the International Billfish Tournament in February, the Blue Water Fishing Tournament in May, and the Belikin Spectacular in October.

The Rivers

Belize’s rivers are also a popular choice for casting a line.  The Silbun and Belize rivers are often fished due to their easy accessibility and convenient facilities, while the Manatee, Macal, Monkey, Temash and Sarstoon rivers offer additional exploration for anglers.  Tarpon, snook and cubera snapper are there for the catching year-round.

Equipment and Lodges

The best part of fishing in Belize is that expert licensed guides are available to make the experience even better.  Most guides can supply all needed equipment as well as their expertise with the ecology and assortment of fish in the area.  No matter what region of Belize, or what experience level, a guide can really be a helpful addition to a fishing excursion.

There are also many lodges that cater to the wants and needs of fishermen and even offer special packages.  Some of these include Belize River Lodge near Belize City (www.belizeriverlodge.com), Blue Marlin Lodge in South Water Caye (www.bluemarlinlodge.com), El Pescador in Ambergris Caye (www.elpescador.com), and Turneffe Island Lodge on Turneffe Island (www.turneffelodge.com).
