Celebrating First Nations Culture – One of the most fascinating elements of a visit to Port Hardy is the evidence of rich native culture and heritage. Stunning galleries and shops line Market Street, offering unique hand-crafted gifts. Some of the local artists regularly invite visitors into their workshops for an insight into the making of their art. The First Nations have lived in this area for more than 8000 years, which can be seen throughout the community in its wood carvings, murals and the totem poles that grace the neighbourhoods. Fort Rupert is home to a traditional native big house and is only a short distance from downtown Port Hardy. The Port Hardy Museum is also an excellent resource. Natural wonders of Port Alberni – The road to the Alberni Valley leads through the magnificent MacMillan Provincial Park and the Cathedral Grove rainforest, where you’ll find ancient Western Red Cedars and towering, 800 year-old Douglas Fir trees. The Valley is also home to one of the tallest waterfalls in North America - Della Falls. At 440m the awe-inspiring chute from Della Lake will greet you as you wander out of the old growth forest at their base. The 16km trail takes you over suspension brides, past lakes and streams, to provide a sneak preview of the vision you will get to see. At Stamp River Falls near Port Alberni, 40 million Pacific Salmon climb the ladders to reach the spawning bed each year. In the summer, the serene riverside park provides effortless trails, a spectacular viewpoint of the river, a day-use picnic area and an overnight campground. For those looking to explore the underground, the area also boasts the biggest cave in Canada called “Blak T”; it offers a 1.5 mile navigable network.
