Plantation Life is Easy and Green

(Part One of a Three-Part Series on Amelia Island Plantation)

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal waterway in northeastern Florida is a small barrier island. Once a refuge for pirates and rumrunners, Amelia Island – just 13 miles long and two and a half miles wide – is now home to the Amelia Island Plantation.

Privately owned and operated, the 1350-acre resort is a natural sanctuary for oak trees, marshes and wildlife species that have inhabited the area for hundreds of years. Every golf course hole, every villa and every home has been created in harmony with the existing habitat.

One of Amelia Island Inn's newly renovated oceanview rooms.

Tucked within this harmonious land- and seascape are a variety of accommodations that include oceanfront inn rooms, private villas and seaside condominiums -- each with its own charm.

At the Amelia Inn & Beach Club, every hotel amenity – from restaurant and pool to concierge and turndown service – is available to guests. But best of all, each of the 249 guestrooms has an incredible view of the pristine dunes, beach and Atlantic Ocean.

Scattered throughout the property are one-, two- and three-bedroom villas and apartments, each with its own personality, plus plenty of room for entertaining and a choice of ocean, Intracoastal or golf course views. The Sea and Turtle Dunes Villas have three-and-a-half miles of beachfront and Fairway Oaks Villas have superb golf course views.
