Magical, Mystical Santorini

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

The first time we visited the island of Santorini in Greece, we were on an antiquities tour and spent most of our time touring the archaeological site of Akrotiri rather than the island itself. Several years later we returned and had the luxury of time, at least enough to explore this magical isle. The 15-mile crescent-shaped volcanic island rises over 1,000 feet above the Aegean Sea. The brilliant white domed buildings on top that mark the towns of Fira and Oia are a beautiful contrast to the cobalt blue color of the sea below and sky above.

Lovely views of the sea from almost any place on the island

Santorini is one of five remnant islands, originally part of a larger landmass that exploded over 3,000 years ago. The resulting tidal waves are believed to have wiped out the Minoan civilian in Crete 70 miles away. And it is here that some say the legendary lost city of Atlantis slipped away beneath the rising sea.

What we know for sure is that Santorini is best enjoyed in September, after the crowds disappear (the island of 7,000 inhabitants gets about one million visitors each year), the waters are the warmest and the breezes the coolest.

Arriving by boat, there are several ways up to the main tourist town of Fira, including a 45-minute hike; a cable car or on the back of a donkey who at times seems bent on dropping its precious cargo (you) off the side of the cliff. Once on top, spend some time exploring the myriad shops and cafes in Fira before heading out to Oia on the northern tip of the island.
