Borough Home to Public Art Project as ‘Animals’ Roam Free

Across Staten Island

 

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Thirty life-sized lions, tigers and bears are roaming Staten Island this summer.  The statues, made of fiberglass, are on display throughout the borough through August.  Lions and Tigers and Bears…S.I. is a public art project presented by the Richmond County Savings Foundation.

 

Professional artists, designers, and art students have created witty, imaginative, amusing, whimsical and inspired designs revolving around the theme “A Celebration of Culture on Staten Island.” 

 

This fun-filled, community-wide project follows the 2005 Dolphin Sightings, a Staten Island public art project which proved successful.

 

“This project is all about celebrating who and what Staten Islanders are and provides an opportunity for all of us to learn more about each other through art,” says Cesar J. Claro, Executive Director of the Foundation.

 

Staten Islanders and visitors are encouraged to visit the life-sized colorful creatures at the Staten Island Children’s Museum, the Conference House, the St. George Theater, the Staten Island University Hospital, and other locations. 

 

After the public display period, the statues will be moved to their new home at the Staten Island Zoo on September 4^th, and will go on public auction at a Richmond County Savings Foundation event open to the public on September 20^th.  Proceeds will benefit four local non-profit community organizations which include: The Art Lab at Snug Harbor, SI Children’s Campaign Charitable Trust, Staten Island NFP Association and the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation.
