Rossini Festival: August 15-21, 2008: Pesaro, Italy
Gioachino Rossini is commemorated in his birthplace, the coastal resort of Pesaro, by an annual summer festival of his music; devoted to a single composer in an appropriate location and, attaining the highest artistic standards, it well merits its epithet ‘the Italian Bayreuth’. The mix of well-known and little known works from Rossini’s vast oeuvre and the participation of some of the world’s greatest bel canto singers make this festival one of the most significant musical events in Italy. The tour includes three operas, an oratorio and a recital.  Also included are excursions to enchanting mediaeval and Renaissance towns to view remarkable works of art tucked away in hilltop fastnesses.
Price: Ł1,990 per person based on double occupancy, price includes: five musical performances, economy roundtrip air-travel London/Bologna, 4-star accommodation in a centrally located hotel, most meals, all tips and taxes, and the service of a lecturer.
The Lucerne Festival: August 22-29, 2008: Lucerne: Switzerland
Long-regarded as one of the most prestigious music festivals in Europe, the event has recently been further enhanced by a brilliant new venue, the KKL (Kultur- und Kongresszentrum), a giant glass-and-steel arts complex located right on the lake just a few hundred yards from the old town of Lucerne.
Among the artists and conductors on the program are Claudio Abbado, Hélčne Grimaud, Natalia Gutman, Colin Davis and Nikolaj Znaider, performing works by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Dvořák, Shostakovich, Gluck and Sibelius.
There will also be four walks into the surrounding hills of Lucerne accompanied by a local walking guide.
Price: Ł2,580 per person based on double occupancy, price includes:
tickets for six concerts, economy roundtrip air travel London/Zurich, accommodation in a 4-star hotel, dating back to the 13th century, most meals, all museum visits, all tips and taxes, and the service of a lecturer.
Haydn at Esterháza: August 26 – September 1, 2008, Esterháza, Hungary
As well as one of the most important locations in the history of music, Esterháza is also a heart-stoppingly beautiful place, a delicious effusion of 1770s architecture and decoration hovering between the gaiety of Rococo and the restraint of Neo-Classicism.
The artists – including the Festetics and Salomon Quartets, the Haydn Academy and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin – perform in a hall of exceptional beauty, whose small capacity (no more than 150) enables a high degree of intimacy of musical communication, and a room in which some of the pieces may have been first performed.
One of the concerts is in Eisenstadt across the border into Austria, at the 17th-century Schloss Esterházy, the prince’s main residence.
Price: Ł1,960 per person based on double occupancy, includes: tickets to six concerts, economy roundtrip air travel London/Vienna, private coach throughout the tour, hotel accommodation in a 5-star 1770s country house, most meals, all admissions to museums, palaces and parks, all tips and taxes, the services of the lecturer and of a Hungarian guide-interpreter.
Schloss Grafenegg Festival: August 27–September 1, 2008; Wachau Region, Austria
Situated in the Wachau region, only forty miles from Vienna and surrounded by some of the loveliest landscapes in Austria, the Neo-Gothic Schloss Grafenegg is now a major arts centre, the climax of whose year is this festival in late summer under the artistic directorship of Rudolf Buchbinder.
First-rate performers – the English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Mark Padmore, Piotr Anderszewski and the Orchestre de Paris with Christoph Eschenbach – play an extremely alluring program in the new, state-of-the art concert hall and outdoor arena.
Price: Ł1,960 per person based on double occupancy, includes concert tickets, roundtrip economy air travel London/Vienna, private coach for the excursions, most meals, accommodation in a lovely old fashioned hotel, admission to all museums, all tips and taxes and the services of the lecturer.
