(a) York, England and its intense sense of presenceStrategically located in the heartland of England, York is literally and figuratively a multilayered city; and it is these layers of human civilization that you encounter in this very traveller-friendly city.

(e) A heritage voluntourism experience, with Stephanie MorelandHeritage travel is one of the most important niche markets in the travel and tourism industry. Increasingly travellers are discovering (or in some cases re-discovering) the joy of being engaged intellectually, aesthetically, and humanistically where "it" actually took place. Well, Stephanie Moreland takes that experience one step further.

(f) Québec and the nature of cultural sovereigntyAs a high school teacher for 32 years, I remember frequent discussions with my students about of the importance of achieving independence and a sense of self-determination. Quite understandably, adolescents long for the day when they can be fully independent. However, I also remember that in those dialogues, I felt it my obligation to make them aware of an even higher state of development in the human being; that of interdependence.

(g) Around the world with world-renowned Dutch ceramist Jeroen BechtoldThere are indeed universal themes issues, and absolutes in art; and art also travels well. Jeroen Bechtold's innovative methods and messages are very much the stuff of travel. In this Travelosophy Talks segment, we accompany him to China, Australia, and Alberta.

(h) Lac Blue Sea: a summer destination that embodies "the genuine good old days"Memory can serve as a survival skill, even though "going back" can be risky business. When we "revisit" the landscapes of our youth, we may find that time has not been kind to them. Occasionally, however, we may happen on a destination that has preserved the essence of "summertime where the livin' is easy."

(i) A Travelosophy Member profile: Tartu City, EstoniaYou may not have heard of this Hanseatic city, which lies on the banks of the River Emajõgi in Estonia, but it is a sterling example of the traveller-friendly, multidimensional, and timeless city.
VISIT:
Tartu City
(j) Your travel wardrobe, and other thoughts on the "culture" of clothesFor the travelsmart consumer, clothing is a critical element in the travel experience. "Looking at" clothing from a cultural viewpoint can also just be fun.

(k) A recommended destination-within-a-destination: York's National Railway MuseumFor many people, trains and train travel are nostalgia in Technicolor. However, with the renewed emphasis on train travel as a low-carbon form of travel, train museums are also historical archives in which are embedded many lessons for the 21st century.

(l) A recommended travel supplier: Hot Springs National Park, ArkansasThe "spa" as an alternative health care "facility" has been around since Roman and Greek times, if not before. Usually we associate spas with natural spaces where mineral-rich and naturally heated waters abound. We often associated spas with Europe. And yet for over 200 years Hot Springs, Arkansas has been an area that would rival any European spa town.

(m) A recommended traveller-friendly website: The Online Etymological DictionaryKnowledge at our finger tips! Wherever we are in the world. Ah! The Internet. The site calls itself "a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English" and it is the Online Etymology Dictionary. It is a safari into the derivation of words and phrases. (Safari 1890; attested from 1860 as a foreign word, from Swahili, lit. "journey, expedition," from Arabic, lit. "referring to a journey," from safari "journey"; which is attested in Eng. as a foreign word from 1858.)
