Earworms: Cracking the Language Code

By Rich Steck & Judi Janofsky

We like France and we like to speak French, so we take advantage of any system that promises to improve our language ability.

We've tried several language learning options, from Pimsleur cassettes to Alliance Française classrooms, from Rosetta Stone DVDs to Michel Thomas' audio classroom. But now comes maybe the most unique of all: Earworms, language learning set to music in a kind of disarming no-pressure pleasure associated with what you're hearing.

Advertisers have long known the impact of a musical jingle - in fact you can probably remember more products by their jingles than by their hard-sell spoken message. I still can't forget:

"Pepsi Cola hits the spot,
12 full ounces that's a lot,
Twice as much for a nickel too,
Pepsi Cola is the drink for you!
Nickel, nickel, nickel, nickel,
Trickle, trickle, trickle, trickle,
Nickel, nickel, nickel, nickel,
La da tee da!"

That corny jingle reaches back generations - you have to be very mature to remember when soft drinks were only a nickel.

The Earworms learning method uses this same concept to boost word and phrase retention. You can learn passively, almost effortlessly, and the medium here is music.

What you hear is a nice piece of easy listening music, with words of dialog spoken rhythmically over it. According to the linguists at Earworms: "You think you're just listening to music, but subconsciously you're taking in masses of verbs, nouns and connecting words, and picking up the correct accent at the same time!"

It's a natural way to absorb language - just think about non-English speaking pop groups that sound like they came right out of America's heartland.
