1. Cross the Columbia on Foot
Take the bridge less traveled this October by running or walking across the beautiful Astoria-Megler Bridge. The 27th annual Great Columbia Crossing offers all-comers an invigorating 10k trek across the longest truss span bridge in North America, followed by an awards ceremony and hearty clam chowder lunch. 2. Rock Out For Big Red
This August, rock out for a great cause. A reunion concert featuring the classic group Jefferson Airplane, among a number of other bands, will take the stage to raise money for the repair of the Royal Nebeker's historic net shed building. Once a net house for local fisherman in the 1880s, the building had recently been converted to an artists' gathering place but was damaged in the winter storms of 2007. The Concert for Big Red will not only benefit the rebuilding of this landmark, but will also commemorate the first (and long overdue) reunion of Jefferson Airplane. 3. 36 Breweries Visit Pacific Northwest Brew Cup
The Baked Alaska restaurant and the new Fort George Brewery and Public House will host the 7th annual Pacific Northwest Brew Cup beer festival this Sept. 26-28. About three dozen Northwest micro-breweries are expected to offer beer samples to attendees, along with a handful of root beers and ginger ales for the younger festival-goers. Food, live music and other vendors will accompany the beverages during the fun, family-friendly Oktoberfest-style outdoor event. Trophies will be awarded for the first keg to run dry, as well as for the people's choice favorite brew. Admission is $6 and includes a souvenir pint glass for the first 1,200 people, and tastes are $1 for a 4 oz. pour.
