Bridge Day New River Gorge, West Virginia Oct. 18, 2008

New River Gorge, W.Va. – Twenty-two rappel teams have been chosen, more than 400 BASE jumpers have registered and the vendor sites are almost sold out. Sponsored this year by AT&T and Little General, the 2008 Bridge Day celebration is shaping up to be one of the best so far, according to Cindy Dragan, Bridge Day chair.

 

Bridge Day, West Virginia’s largest single-day event, is the only day it is legal to walk on the New River Gorge Bridge, which towers 876 feet above the scenic New River. Festival goers will be able to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage as they take in food and crafts from more than 180 vendors, and watch more than 400 BASE jumpers take a giant leap off the bridge.

“We are fortunate to be able to work with AT&T and Little General to put together a day that will showcase the beauty and adventure of the New River Gorge,” stated Dragan.

West Virginia American Water Down Under Tours

For those interested in watching the BASE jumpers from the bottom of the New River Gorge, West Virginia American Water and the New River Juniors have teamed up this year to offer a Down Under Tour. For $50 per person, individuals will be able to pick a time, either 8:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m., to board a van into the gorge to watch rappellers as they slide and BASE jumpers as they leap 876 feet to the bottom. Included in the price is a lunch for each participant. Spaces are limited, so get your requests in as soon as possible! Bridge Day Motorcycle Ride

Songer Whitewater and the Motorcycle Safety Awareness Program are hosting a ride for motorcyclists on Bridge Day to promote safety awareness for both riders and motorists.  Up to 200 riders will be permitted to participate in the event, which will depart Songer Whitewater’s base camp, travel across the New River Gorge Bridge, follow Route 16 to Chimney Corner and travel Route 60 back to Songer.

New River Gorge Bridge Day Bus Stop Locations

The best way to get to the bridge is to ride the Appalachian Power shuttles. This year, Appalachian Power and the Oak Hill Rotary Club have agreed to help sponsor the shuttles to keep them affordable. For $2, visitors will be able to park their cars and take a shuttle to the Bridge Day entrance. Below is a list of bus stop locations. There also will be special motorcycle parking areas. SOUTH

Oak Hill Kroger/K-mart – The bus stop will be located on the Kroger side of the median between Kroger and K-mart, at the far end of the median from the store.

Fayetteville Wal-Mart/Lowes – The bus stop will be located at the far left side of Wal-Mart.

Fayetteville High School – The bus stop is right at the entrance to the gravel parking area. The buses turn around in front of the school and stop to pick up at the entrance to the upper gravel area.

Fayetteville Court House – The bus stop will be in front of Studio B Gallery.

NORTH

Milroy Grose Road – Parking is at the New River Campground. 

Smales Branch Road – In front of the Lighthouse Worship Center.
