Fall Foliage At Its Best
Right after Labor Day, our thoughts automatically move to Fall. It's a time of renewal and hope. When the air is crisp, the evenings are cooler and the trees, as if showing their happiness that hot summer is over, put on a show of brilliant color.
Several parts of North America are a little more showy than others. Here are just a few where you can travel to experience Fall Foliage at its best.
Litchfield Hills, Connecticut Chris Martin, Director of Forestry for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, has chosen Litchfield Hills as the state's best place for leaf peeping. Drive across the state on Route 7, the ideal fall foliage experience. Complementing the view, stops along the way include a Revolutionary War site in Ridgefield, waterfalls in Kent State Park, and after a quick hike to the top, the Appalachian Trail offers unrivaled views of the valley. Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Stroll down the streets of Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area and you can revel in the warm reds, golds and oranges of the fall foliage. Foliage in Virginia is later than in New England as mid-late October is peak. Williamsburg is gorgeous in fall - temperatures are perfect - warm, mild and great for golf as well. Visitors to the area are just in time for the fall harvest season, where they can learn how citizens of 18th century America prepared for the winter months by conversing with journeymen, tavern keepers and townspeople. Atlantic Canada Savvy leaf peepers know that in September and October Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island) offers lower prices, fewer crowds and plenty of elbow room.
