A SUBTROPICAL WINTER DESTINATION
Winter is prime time for beach vacationing on South Padre Island in Texas, thanks to its subtropical island climate (the Island is on the same latitude as Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The white sandy beaches and blue water are still there, but without the summer crowds.
From wildlife viewing to special events, the Island takes on a new dynamic in the winter… not to mention lower rates and great weather. Here are a few great reasons to head south this winter:
1. White, sugary beaches and tropical blue waters. The quality of South Padre Island’s beaches is famous. In fact, Men’s Fitness, a magazine distributed nationally in the U.S., named it one of the country’s top 10 beaches earlier in 2008. This 34-mile long tropical island offers a warm, comfortable climate year-round in an easy-to-get-to destination at the southern tip of Texas, only 30 miles north of the Mexico border.
2. Up-close encounters with nature: Wildlife viewing opportunities abound on the Island.
- The Island is a natural habitat for hundreds of species of migratory birds and waterfowl. With abundant opportunities for bird-watching, the Island has a way of creating “accidental birders.” Visitors can take guided bird-watching tours or visit the Island’s free, dedicated birding-watching sites.
- The Island’s waters provide a year-round home to dolphins; several tours give the opportunity to view these creatures and other marine wildlife up-close.
- Get a look at giant sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc., an organization that rescues and rehabilitates marine turtles.
3. Watersports. The Island’s waters hold plenty of charm for visitors year-round. Fishing and watersports such as kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding are going strong throughout fall and winter. With calm, shallow waters and great wind conditions, South Padre Island is becoming a mecca for windsurfing and kiteboarding. The Island offers several certified instructors, who say that the average beginner is up and riding after three to six hours of instruction.
