March 19 through April 5, 2009
The Savannah Music Festival (SMF) is Georgia’s largest musical arts festival and one of the most distinctive cross-genre music festivals in the world. It has grown into such prominence in recent years, bringing internationally renowned musicians in jazz, blues, classical, bluegrass, gospel and other styles of American and international roots music to Savannah in early spring. SMF programming combines elegance and soul in a way that mirrors the history and culture of Savannah. The 2009 festival is the most artistically diverse season to date, with performances by Savion Glover, Neko Case, Eddie Palmieri y La Perfecta II, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with Marcus Roberts, Ellis Marsalis Quartet, Dianne Reeves, Ian Bostridge with Julius Drake, Chick Corea & John McLaughlin’s Five Peace Band, Mariza, Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile, Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, the Academy of Ancient Music, Cedric Watson, the Prazak Quartet, and Bela Fleck’s Africa Project. Musical tributes from a variety of participating artists will celebrate the 100th anniversary of native son Johnny Mercer’s birth, including the premiere of a commissioned all-Mercer five night stand by Andrea Marcovicci. Tickets are available online at www.savannahmusicfestival.org or by phone at 912-525-5050.
