La Jolla Kayak’s Guided Tours Bring You Up Close and Personal with Gray Whales
SAN DIEGO—It’s not necessary to go to Mexico to have the amazing experience of seeing Gray Whales from a few feet away in a small boat. Each fall, as thousands of Gray Whales migrate from Alaska to the Gulf of California, they pass close to the Southern California coast often pausing briefly in the shallow waters near La Jolla Shores. La Jolla Kayak’s tour guides lead groups of ocean kayakers out to see these magnificent creatures. Kayakers can get amazingly close to the whales without the sound of boat engines to interfere with the experience. The two and a half hour tour takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery along the Southern California coast including La Jolla’s incredible Seven Caves. Along with Gray Whales you may also encounter sea lions, garibaldi, leopard sharks and other wildlife during the tour.
Whale watching by kayak is an extraordinary, eco-friendly way to experience the California Gray whale in its natural environment. La Jolla Kayak tracks sightings near La Jolla Shores throughout the winter, increasing the chance that tours will encounter whales. However, since gray whales are wild animals, they cannot guarantee a sighting every time. Tours leave twice daily at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from mid-December through mid-February and cost $65 for a single kayak and $110 for a double kayak. Wetsuits are included. Reservations are recommended particularly on weekends and can be made by calling La Jolla Kayak at 858-459-1114 or online at www.lajollakayak.com.
