1.   History Comes to Life: Astoria and Warrenton's New Audio Tours

Travelers to the historic regions of Astoria and Warrenton, Ore., can feel like locals with two new downloadable audio tours highlighting popular historic attractions and movie scene locations. Launched earlier this month, the free tours are narrated by local experts who reveal little-known facts and help visitors relive past eras.

 

Produced by the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce, the first tour, "Astoria and Warrenton's Historical Attractions," highlights 21 locations around the community with historical significance. "The Reel Astoria" tour features 12 destinations featured in major motion pictures, most famously the cult classic "The Goonies." The two audio tours and corresponding maps are available to download at no cost at www.OldOregon.com, and visitors can also pick up printed maps at the Chamber.

 

2.   Storytellers of the Sea: 12th Annual Fisher Poets Gathering

Telling tales of earning a living on the water, the 12th annual Fisher Poets Gathering in Astoria, Ore., brings fishermen and women together to share their touching personal accounts in the former canning capital of the world. Audiences will be reeled in with a mix of crafted free verse, rhyming couplets, humorous readings and boisterous songs.

When: Friday – Sunday, Feb. 27 – March 1, 2009

Where: Restaurants, pubs, galleries and performance venues throughout downtown Astoria .

Cost: Weekend admission buttons are available for $10, and day passes are $5.

3.   Celebrate Crustations at the 27th Astoria-Warrenton Crab and Seafood Festival

Seafood lovers rejoice when the annual Astoria-Warrenton Crab and Seafood Festival crawls back to town. The popular three-day event features a traditional crab dinner with fresh-caught Dungeness crab, and vendors offer fresh shrimp, salmon, oysters, halibut, clam chowder and other ocean delicacies. Visitors can also enjoy craft beer and local wine selections, arts and crafts from regional artisans, and live music all weekend long.

When: Friday – Sunday, April 24 – 26, 2009

Where: The Clatsop County Fairgrounds

Cost: Tickets are $8 on Friday, $10 on Saturday and $5 on Sunday; weekend passes are available for $18, and children under the age of 12 are free.

4.   News and Notes: King Crabs, Local Stouts and 25-cent Shows

 

Make Your Own Deadliest Catch

Get up close and personal with the Columbia River on the "Aleutian Ballad" king crab boat, seen in season two of the popular Discovery Channel series, "The Deadliest Catch." On Saturday, January 31, the captain and crew will take guests to hear true-life stories, see crab fishing demonstrations and enjoy a hearty lunch of clam chowder and crab cakes. Fort George Brewery Celebrates Stout Month

Celebrate the chilly month of February appropriately, during Stout Month at Astoria's Fort George Brewery. The Liberty Theater Turns 84

The historic Liberty Theater will celebrate its 84th birthday on April 4 by giving a nod to its heritage.
