First American Odyssey Relay to start in Gettysburg

 

Running and history will cross picturesque paths across three states, several Civil War battlefields and some of our nation’s capital’s most famous memorials as part of the inaugural American Odyssey Relay Run Adventure, a unique team relay event to be held April 24-25, 2009.

Spanning approximately 200 miles, the race will start in historic Gettysburg, where some of the most famous battles of the Civil War were fought. Runners will encounter several covered bridges and streams before crossing the famous Mason-Dixon Line into Maryland and into Washington, D.C.

“We’ve spent close to a year constructing a course that will be incredibly scenic, safe and simple to follow,” said AOR Race Director Bob Fleshner. “Whether you’ve done other relays or this will be your first, you’ll absolutely love running where the locals run.”

 

 

 

Celebrate the Lincoln Bicentennial in Gettysburg

 

President Abraham Lincoln’s stop in Gettysburg was short – only about 24 hours.

But that visit – to help dedicate the Soldiers’ National Cemetery – would prove to be Lincoln’s most powerful moment, one in which the president reminded this divided nation of our forefather’s dreams and set the country on a new course of hope.

The Gettysburg Address is known worldwide and those 10 sentences were delivered on the very hallowed ground that four months earlier was soaked with the blood of American soldiers.

This year marks the 200^th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth – the Lincoln Bicentennial. Cities across the United States will pay tribute to the popular president throughout the year. Gettysburg, as the site of that immortal speech, will play a big part in that celebration.

 

 

Gettysburg Festival unveils early headliners

 

Early headline acts announced for this summer’s Gettysburg Festival – which include a band known as “the Boston Pops… in Brass,” a modern dance company known as “a miracle of skill and energy” and an American jazz icon known as one of the most critically acclaimed jazz pianists of all time – reveal top level talent lining up to be included on the festival roster.

With several main performers still be to announced, the 10-day Gettysburg Festival (June 18-28, 2009) announced that world famous jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, The River City Brass, and The Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) will all be featured at the 2009 festival.

“This year’s line-up promises to once again place the Gettysburg Festival among the nation’s best celebrations of the arts,” said Festival Vice-President Alice Estrada. “Philadanco, and The River City Brass are ensemble performances you won’t want to miss. And welcoming a world-renowned jazz artist like Ahmad Jamal is testament to the festival’s draw.”
