LOW AIRFARES AND FAVORABLE EXCHANGE RATE MAKE TRAVEL TO TASMANIA MORE ENTICING THAN EVER

02-19-2009

Fares Almost Half What They Were Thanks to Two New Carriers

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia (February 2009): With the debut of two new trans-Pacific carriers, airfares to Tasmania for this spring and summer are approaching half the cost of what they were in recent months. With low fares, and an exchange rate that is about 35% better than it was last summer ($1USD = $1.52AUD as of February 13, 2009), travel to Australia's southernmost state is highly affordable.

Recently named the top island getaway in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific by Travel + Leisure magazine, Tasmania is just an hour's flight from Melbourne and two hours from Sydney.

V Australia, Virgin Blue's new long-haul carrier, starts service between Los Angeles and Sydney on February 27, 2009 and has offered introductory return fares as low as $549. More competition will arrive on July 1, 2009 when Delta Air Lines starts a daily trans-Pacific service linking Los Angeles and Sydney. The U.S. carrier is offering a launch fare of $499 from Los Angeles to Sydney for travel between July and September 21, 2009. Passengers on the Sydney-LA service can remain on the same plane and continue to Atlanta, Delta's main hub.

With a 30% increase in the number of seats on the market, the three other carriers operating a trans-Pacific service- Qantas Airways, United and Air New Zealand - are also offering similar bargains. Qantas, for example, is offering a $598 roundtrip ticket from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Sydney, Brisbane or Auckland at the beginning of February for travel until April 30, 2009. The carrier is also replacing its Boeing 747s with the new Airbus A380. Passengers will have more space in all classes. Air New Zealand has a $598 fare available until March 2, 2009, from either Los Angeles or San Francisco to Sydney for travel between May 1 and September 21, 2009. The fare from New York City is just $200 more.

In addition to the falling trans-Pacific airfares, airlines are making Tasmania even easier to access with affordable domestic connections. The Qantas Aussie AirPass, for example, is on sale for $999 until February 27, 2009 and includes roundtrip trans-Pacific flights, plus three domestic Australia flights in Zone 1, which includes major cities in Tasmania. The Virgin Blue Airpass, which can be used by international travellers in conjunction with any international airline, has flights to Hobart or Launceston from Melbourne starting at $110 each way.
