New Architecture Tours for 2009
Known for their architecture tours throughout the Chicago area, the Chicago Architecture Foundation has added new tours for 2009. With more than 85 different tours available including the architecture river cruise, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, 224 S. Michigan, continues to offer a broad selection of intriguing architecture tours all provided by trained and certified volunteer docents.
Daniel Burnham: Architect, Planner, Leader: Fridays at 1:30pm: March 6, April 10, May 8; Sundays at 1:30pm: March 22, April 26, May 24. Created for the centennial celebration of the 1909 Plan of Chicago, this walking tour explores Burnham’s career using examples of his work in the Loop. Participants will learn about Burnham’s impact on the architecture and planning professions as well as his unique ability to work with creative talent and community leaders to accomplish great feats.
Palmer House: Saturdays at 10:30am: March 7, April 4, May 2
This 45-minute walking tour goes behind the scenes of this remarkable Chicago landmark. One of the oldest continuously-operated hotels in the world, the restoration of this historic treasure is an inspiring tale of perseverance, talent, and vision.
Modern Wing of the Art Institute: In partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago, CAF docents reveal the context for the Renzo Piano-designed addition and show how it fits into the overall design of the campus. Visitors will see how Piano’s vision pushes the limits of modern museum design while still respecting its historic and contemporary neighbors. Check architecture.org for dates and times.
River North: Transformation of a Neighborhood:Sunday at 10:30am: May 31, July 19; Saturday at 10:30am: June 20. After many years of transformation, River North has regained its neighborhood character and is home to thousands of new residents who have been attracted by its unique mix of old and new. This walking tour surveys an area which retains architectural gems from its residential and industrial golden age, alongside cutting edge designs from the 21st century.
