"BEST VALUE" AWARD GOES TO MAINE WINDJAMMER ASSOCIATION

03-12-2009

Mid-coast, MAINE—The Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) received top honors in the "Best Value Accommodation in New England" category in a survey recently conducted by the New England Travel Writers Network (NETWN).

Survey participants included active writers in the Society of American Travel Writers Northeast Chapter. Members were invited to nominate properties in three categories, including best value, green and luxury accommodations in New England. Results were announced at the Boston Globe Travel Show last month, where the winners were on hand to make presentations to travel professionals about their properties.

For approximately $150 per person per day, windjammer guests can sail an authentic 19th-century tall ship, dine on lobster and delicious home-cooked meals, explore pristine islands and working fishing villages and enjoy live music and story-telling under the stars or simply relax with a book or game of Scrabble by the woodstove.

"Best Value" practices can be found in every aspect of our windjammer trips," says Meg Maiden, director of the Maine Windjammer Association, "from the hearty home-cooked meals that incorporate fresh, local ingredients to the friendly, able crewmembers who take a personal interest in making sure every guest's experience is comfortable, safe and enjoyable."

Weeklong cruises start at $800 per person and include all meals, accommodations, activities and even a lobster bake. Three-day trips start at $400. This season, the MWA is also offering three new value-added packages: an Air & Sea Package that includes round-trip airfare to Boston for $150; a Sail & Parks package that includes free passes to nearby state and national parks; and a Land & Sea Package that combines a three-day stay at an historic inn in Rockland.

The Maine Windjammer Association includes a dozen historic sailing vessels that offer three- to six-day cruises out of Camden and Rockland, Maine. For more information, contact MWA at 800-807-WIND or www.sailmainecoast.com.
