Lake Powell continues to rise -- three new deals make for a hot summer

05-21-2009

Last year, Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area drew a record number of visitors from the opening of Castle Rock Cut - a shortcut that shaves 12 miles off travel between the upper and lower ends of Lake Powell.  The shortcut allows visitors to save on time and gas, and makes it easier to access remote and unspoiled canyons and beaches, including the Rainbow Bridge National Monument (the largest natural bridge in the world), Padre Bay and Warm Creek Bay.

The elevation of Lake Powell continues to rise, but this year the National Park Service took efforts to guarantee the infamous Castle Rock Cut would open sooner and stay open later by deepening the Cut. Work to deepen the Cut began in February and was completed mid-April. Workers removed nearly 87,000 cubic yards of material and lowered the depth of the cut by approximately 8 feet to 3,607 feet in elevation. The excavation project on the Cut allowed it to open five weeks earlier than in 2008. (Editor’s note: aerial shots of what the Cut looks like before and after it is open area available).

With the recent opening of Castle Rock Cut expected to last through 2009 and the centennial anniversary of Rainbow Bridge becoming a monument in 2010, there is no better time to travel to Lake Powell for the ultimate water adventure.
