The mixed hardwood forests on the slopes are showing rich yellows, reds and oranges. The continued dry and cool weather is accelerating the change.
HENDERSONVILLE: Dogwoods, sourwoods and black gums are revealing cascading deep red colors. Located just minutes from Historic Downtown Hendersonville, Jump Off scenic overlook provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah mountain ranges.
HICKORY: Vibrant colors mixed with gold, yellow, orange and red are sprinkled throughout the foothills. Driving west on Interstate 40 provides a breathtaking view of fall's magnificent display.
FAYETTEVILLE: Cape Fear Botanical Garden’s Oak Loop Trail (35 percent green) is the best show this week. This trail winds through an upland mixed hardwood forest overlooking Cross Creek and nearby ravines. The color is coming from glowing orange-red blackgums as well as red and southern sugar maples, white and swamp red oaks, hickories, ash, dogwoods, elms, river birches and perky yellow grape leaves.
HALIFAX COUNTY: The leaves are still beautiful and the trees aren't shedding them quite yet. Enjoy great views along the Roanoke River. Explore Medoc Mountain State Park or the Roanoke Canal Trail to take in the color.

FALL FISHING SUMMARY: Cooler weather has pushed a number of nice speckled sea trout into the creeks off the Neuse River. Fishing for speckled sea trout has been good with both live bait and artificial lures. Puppy drum and flounder are still around. Increased striper bites have been reported. False albacore fishing has picked up off the beaches of Morehead City with good speckled trout and puppy drum fishing there.
