Guernsey County, Ohio offers budget vacation destinations

CAMBRIDGE, OH (June 23, 2009) – Enjoy a slower pace among the charming city streets of historic Downtown Cambridge, Ohio by choosing to visit one of several attractions for the perfect budget vacation destination!

 

Historic Downtown Cambridge offers old fashioned charm, unique shopping experiences with locally owned shops, museums and train rides! This summer find the perfect vacation activities that won’t break your budget or empty your bank account!

 

The Byesville Scenic Railway, on 2^nd Street in Byesville, transports passengers back in history to the days when coal mining was king in Guernsey County. Listen to the stories of the local miners, sing along to coal mining songs and enjoy the scenery on this 1.5 hour train ride. Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for children. Train rides take place on select weekends May through December.

 

Visitors to The Living Word Outdoor Drama can witness the story of Christ on a spectacular panoramic set, which is America’s most authentic recreation of Old Jerusalem. Tickets are $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $5 for children ages 4 – 12. The play runs June – September.

 

Visitors from around the world visit Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass, located at 1230 Morton Ave., to watch glass being made by hand. Cameras are welcome! Visit the factory Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Showroom hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tours are free.

 

Located in the Tenth Street Antique Mall in Downtown Cambridge, the Hopalong Cassidy Museum has an extensive collection of products endorsed by William Boyd, a Cambridge native who became known as the cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy. Hopalong Cassidy, along with his horse Topper, was the hero of 28 western novels written by Clarence E. Mulford in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. These books were made into 60 feature films and then into one hour TV programs. Admission to the museum is free.

 

Experience history at the John & Annie Glenn Historic Site, located at 72 West Main St. in New Concord. All ages will enjoy learning about life during the Great Depression and the Home Front during WW II through a living history presentation. The site will be open from mid-April to Labor Day from Wednesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (55 and up), and $3 for students of all ages.

 

Glass enthusiasts will enjoy factory tours at Mosser Glass, located on 9279 Cadiz Rd. Guided tours show artisans at work gathering and pressing the glass to create beautiful pieces. Tours are free Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.

 

The National Museum of Cambridge Glass, located at 136 S. Ninth St., offers something for every glass collector. The museum has a 6,000 piece glass display of Cambridge Glass which was manufactured in 1903-1958, displays to demonstrate how glass pieces were created and three feature display rooms that show life during that time period. A special education center permits many hands-on experiences. The museum is open April through October, Wednesday – Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, and children under 3 are free.

 

Degenhart Paperweight & Glass Museum features exhibits on glass making and its history in Cambridge and throughout the Ohio Valley. The museum also offers a gift shop and research library. Open year round, admission is $1.50 adults and $1 for seniors and AAA members.
