Here flip flops are an essential component of the laid-back Southern California wardrobe, while the classic Woody wagon is still seen as a viable mode of transportation and beach cruisers appear to outnumber automobiles as a means to get around town. This is the city where the scene of dogs frolicking in Dog Beach's surf makes you smile and think to yourself, "this could be an illustration out of a Dr. Seuss book – big dogs, small dogs, fat dogs, skinny dogs, all dogs!" Where friends and families can gather around a bonfire on the beach; where one can stroll along the Pier enjoying the Pacific breeze and salt air, day or night, while admiring the 8.5 mile stretch of unobstructed ocean view. This is Huntington Beach – Surf City USA!
The Kite Party is sponsored by The Kite Connection, a local kite shop located on the Huntington Beach pier that has been supplying sport kites for 25 years. Dave Shenkman, the store owner and avid kite enthusiast, has taught more than 500,000 elementary students about kites through a program called Kites for Kids. He also offers free sport kite flying lessons, by appointment, every Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for those who wish to brush up on their skills. Kite flying has evolved over the years from a passive pastime into an active sport. The American Kitefliers Association, founded in 1964, now has more than 4,000 members in 35 countries.
