Historic Gettysburg, Pa., named an American icon
New National Geographic book details places, events and festivals
In the book published by National Geographic, McKechnie eloquently describes Gettysburg’s rich history of July 1863, as tens of thousands of Union and Confederate troops converged on the small, but thriving, Pennsylvania town. He also writes how that bloody battle led to the dedication four months later and Lincoln’s immortal Gettysburg Address.
“It's impossible to think of American history without thinking of the Civil War – and of the Civil War without thinking of Gettysburg,” said McKechnie. “Understanding what happened here and recognizing just how fragile America’s future was in July 1863 makes it hard not to appreciate the sacrifices of soldiers who ensured that today we still have the privilege of living in a nation of united states.”
He includes visits to the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Museum and Visitor Center, the various tours offered in Gettysburg, the Gettysburg Hotel and the David Wills House. He also mentions the stores, restaurants and pubs in Downtown Gettysburg.
Other iconic places featured in USA 101 include Valley Forge, Plymouth Rock, Times-Square, the Kentucky Derby, Graceland, Gateway Arch, Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park.
Director Ron Maxwell back in town for special screening of “Gettysburg”
Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership brings one-of-a-kind events to annual conference
The screening and discussion will be held on Wednesday, July 15, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Majestic Theater in downtown Gettysburg. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children.
“Gettysburg” is based off Michael Shaara’s 1974 novel, “Killer Angels,” for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The movie follows all three days of battle, including the famous Pickett’s Charge. The movie marks the first time the National Park Service allowed the motion picture industry to film scenes on the Gettysburg battlefield, including Devil’s Den and Little Round Top.
Maxwell is also the director of “Gods and Generals,” the prequel to “Gettysburg.”
This special screening is part of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership’s Annual Conference, July 14-17, in Gettysburg.
Later that evening, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., the conference will feature “Lincoln in 3D: A Transformational Evening,” a unique and fascinating journey through Lincoln’s presidency. This stereographic look at Lincoln is presented by photo experts Bob Zeller and John Richter.
