Helsinki Selected as Possible World Design Capital 2012
Helsinki has been selected for the “short list” for the World Design Capital 2012 together with the city of Eindhoven of the Netherlands from. The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, ICSID, will announce the winner of this biennial competition in November. 46 cities from 27 countries applied for the 2012 nomination.
The Helsinki application was a joint venture of five cities, Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The World Design Capital competition celebrates the merits of design and highlights the accomplishments of cities that leverage design as a tool to improve the social, cultural and economic life of cities. The current and first World Design Capital is Seoul, Korea - 2010.

Klaus K launches the first carbon footprint calculator for hotels in Finland
The four-year-old Klaus K Hotel, Finland’s first design and lifestyle hotel, is also the first hotel in Finland to provide information on environmental impact with its carbon footprint calculator. The calculator enables guests to calculate their carbon footprint per night of their stay.
One of the most significant environmental impacts generated by hotels is carbon emissions which consist of direct and indirect emissions of electricity, heating energy, water, and waste consumption. According to ecompter.com, average carbon dioxide emission for a one-night stay at a hotel is between 10 – 30 kg CO2-e, the equivalent of 60 – 180 kilometers by a car using fuel.

Hotel “F7” for extended-stay guests to be open in the heart of Helsinki
Boutique Hotel Haven, opened in February, will get a sister hotel for guests planning extended stays. A new concept for Helsinki, “Hotel F7” (working name) will be completed in summer 2010.
Located in the heart of Helsinki near Market Square, on Fabianinkatu 7, the 60-room hotel will be characterized by distinctive architecture and its ability to cater to long-term guests.

The Nordic countries’ first anti-aging spa SiluettiSpa expands to Hotel Haven in Helsinki
The Nordic countries’ first anti-aging spa SiluettiSpa, has opened a mini spa on the premises of Hotel Haven. Two treatment rooms are reserved for the use of hotel guests, and some treatments can also be given in hotel rooms. SiluettiSpa also offers more extensive services at its facilities on Pohjoisesplanadi.
SiluettiSpa’s results-oriented programs are based on western medicine and include personalized beauty and health treatments.

Helsinki Congress Paasitorni to add a new hotel and expanded meeting space
A new 170-room hotel is planned in connection with Helsinki Congress Paasitorni. The hotel is expected to be completed by early autumn 2011. The new hotel will occupy buildings from three different periods: the original granite ”castle” dating from 1925, the 1955 office complex, and a new building.
The hotel will add three new conference facilities, the largest of which will seat 300 persons. In addition to offering approximately 30 other conference rooms, Paasilinna currently features a large conference hall seating 800.
Restaurant facilities include the current 300-seat Paasiravintola and the planned, floating 200-seat restaurant pavilion which will be accessible by boat and waterbus in front of the restaurant Granniittilinna.
