THE OPPOSITE HOUSE CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS
12-10-2009
WITH A SCULPTED TREE...CHINA-STYLE
While Claridge's got Galliano's tree, The Opposite House commissioned American artist Joseph Ellis, who has been studying and working as an artist in Beijing since 2005, to create their Christmas sculpture. The piece is comprised of 2000 individually tied and hung porcelain vinegar and soy sauce pots, icons of Chinese culture.
Six rings of lights illuminate the tree, symbolically representing a popular Chinese new year saying (translated): "everything goes as planned." The number "6" is also symbolic of China's recent 60th anniversary celebration, where the elemental zodiac cycle came full circle. Hanging from the hotel's atrium ceiling, the tree stands 31 feet off the ground and weighs an estimated 353 pounds.
