If you’ve ever been hit with a surprise fee when you rented a car or booked an airline ticket and found yourself saying, “There ought to be a law,” I have some good news for you: There is. Or at least, there could be.

Over the weekend, the Department of Transportatin (DOT) announced that they have given the oneworld Alliance provisional antitrust immunity. This brings oneworld into line with SkyTeam and Star Alliance and is the final nail in the coffin of advancing competition between scores of airlines in the international arena.

If you didn't make reservations before now, expect to pay extra for checked luggage on Virgin America. Unless you're booked in first class or or in main cabin select, the first suitcase, which can weigh up to 70 pounds, will set you back $25.
