TRI TO BE FIRST

Participants in the inaugural Kuparisaari Triathlon, August 15 will be the first to participate in the U.P.’s longest distance multisport race in the northern-most part of Michigan. The Kuparisaari Tri is the only half iron distance triathlon in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and will offer scenic shoreline views of Lake Superior, some of the Midwest’s best biking and even fresh baked pasties at the finish line or maybe it is the Finnish line, since Kuparisaari is Finnish for Copper Island. FAIR ENOUGH

Dairy cows and racecars, acrobats and lumberjacks will add to the fun and excitement of the Upper Peninsula State Fair, August 16-22 in Escanaba. The summertime tradition that began in 1927 almost ended when state funding dried up last year, until the new U.P. DRIVE TIME

Chrome will be flashing and the hot rods rolling in the Motor City August 21 when more than a million people turn out for a one-day, moveable review of 40,000 classic cars as they cruise the main vein that slices through eight suburban Detroit communities. The official Woodward Dream Cruise is Saturday, but early in the week car buffs arrive from across the U.S. and other lands for pre-cruise festivities. Honk if you want to talk to a big wheel with the 16th annual event.
