 Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay Two Significant 2011 and 2012 Anniversaries

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND—With 2011 just around the corner, the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau (AAACCVB) wants to spread the word about the milestone events that businesses and organizations will be celebrating in and around the destination over the next two years. Anne Arundel Medical Center will celebrate the ten-year anniversary of its Acute Care Pavilion’s opening on December 2, 2001 in 2011. It was on this date that the move from the downtown Annapolis hospital site to the Medical Park location was completed. In addition, the South Tower of AAMC’s Acute Care Pavillion is slated to open in 2011, ten years after the building it is attached to first opened. B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore and the B&O Railroad Museum’s Ellicott City Station will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War from April 2011 through December 2015. The Civil War was the first major conflict where railroads played a prominent role, and the B&O was the major line that straddled a divided country. Between April 19, 1861 (The Baltimore Riot of 1861) and April 21, 1865 (Lincoln’s funeral train leaving Baltimore for Illinois), the B&O stood as witness and participant in the greatest conflict the United States has ever faced. The B&O Railroad Museum can tell better than most the story of how railroads and railroaders shaped the course of American history during pivotal moments of the conflict. Four Rivers: The Heritage Area of Annapolis, London Town & South County will celebrate its 10th anniversary in fall 2011. One of Maryland’s state heritage areas, Four Rivers is an established heritage tourism destination on the Chesapeake Bay’s western shore. With Annapolis as its crown jewel, the Heritage Area stretches from Sandy Point State Park at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, through southern Anne Arundel County, to Rose Haven at the Calvert County line.
