WHAT'S NEW First Nations' Salish Welcome Figure complete - blessing at top of Whistler Mountain slated for September 2 Master carver Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) has hand-carved a Salish Welcome Figure that is currently being moved into position near the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola station. Its location is of significance, as a culmination of the new Cultural Journey Sea to Sky stretching along the newly improved Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler. An official blessing takes place at the top of Whistler Mountain (adjacent to the Roundhouse) on Thursday, September 2 at 11:00 am (upload between 10:00-10:30am, valid lift ticket required). The Salish Welcome Figure becomes a permanent fixture in the alpine to be appreciated by sightseers, hikers, skiers and boarders for years to come. The carving is a joint effort by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre to increase the profile of Aboriginal Tourism in the region. slcc.ca/explore/featured-exhibits RBC GranFondo Whistler - 4,000 cyclists tackle the Sea to Sky Highway, September 11 Positions for the inaugural GrandFondo Whistler were sold out months in advance. Given the massive response, organizers are confident race numbers will grow to 10,000 participants within two years, solidifying the region's reputation as a powerhouse biking destination. The single-day event, already popular in Europe is making its debut in Canada - and chose Whistler as the ultimate destination. The recently enhanced 120-kilometre stretch of highway between Vancouver and Whistler will see 4,000 cyclists of all skill levels participate. With an average age of 45, cyclists include several Canadian professional and amateur athletes from such sports as hockey and triathlon. Starting at 7 a.m., participants will ride in a dedicated lane climbing a total of more than 2,400 vertical metres along the route which stretches from sea level in Vancouver to Whistler Village at an elevation of 675 metres. Inaugural Whistler Half Marathon announced for 2011 - envisioned to become one of Canada's ‘must do' running events Whistler just announced the launch of the Whistler Half Marathon - a new world-class sporting event adding to a long list of others, including: the TELUS World Ski &Snowboard Festival, Kokanee Crankworx, The Whistler Cup, World Cup sliding, downhill and Nordic skiing events, countless mountain bike races, the sold out GranFondo road bike race and the granddaddy of them all - the 2010 Winter Games. Building on this solid foundation, organizers intend to establish the Whistler Half Marathon as one of the ‘must-do' events on a runner's race calendar. The inaugural race takes place June 4, 2011 on a 21.1 kilometer gently rolling course. The course passes through Whistler's pedestrian Village, nearby neighbourhoods and along Whistler's already-popular running paths, with spectacular mountain views throughout.
