Spooktacular events in haunted Marietta

MARIETTA, OH (September 27, 2010) – Autumn is in the air and Halloween is just around the corner making October the perfect time to enjoy some of the ‘spooktacular’ events that Marietta has to offer for thrill seekers of all ages.

“Marietta is full of historic buildings and haunts that provide some fun for visitors this fall,” Marietta/Washington Co. Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Wendy Wharff said. “Cool weather adds to the attraction of many local outdoor events, such as hayrides and ghost tours, and most are suitable for all ages.”

The Castle, located at 418 Fourth Street, will be presenting a Victorian Funeral Program on October 9. The program will be a historically accurate re-creation of a Victorian funeral and wake and includes a presentation on the traditions, rituals and superstitions surrounding death during the Victorian era. This program is not appropriate for children. Please call ahead for reservations.

Others may prefer to walk the streets and alleys of Downtown Marietta looking for the ghosts that inhabit their favorite haunts on a Hidden Marietta Ghost Trek. The tours will depart from the fountain at the corner of Front and Greene Streets every Friday and Saturday evening through October 30. The tour will take you down sidewalks and deserted alleys and lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Flashlights and cameras are suggested to enhance your ghost hunting experience! Tours start at 8:00 p.m. Cost is $10 per person.

The Washington County Historical Society and Hidden Marietta are offering Twilight Tours of the Anchorage – Marietta's original haunted house – on Sunday evenings, October 10, 17 & 24. Hear the tragic story of Eliza Putnam whose unhappy spirit may still wander the halls. Learn what paranormal investigators have captured on film and tape during their overnight stays. Discover the truth behind the legends of tunnels, secret rooms and runaway slaves. Tours begin at 7 p.m. Reservations are not required. $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under. Cash only. The Anchorage is located at 403 Harmar Street in Marietta.

Spooky hayrides will be offered at Sweetapple Farms, located on SR 7 and SR 550 across from Warren High School, on select dates in October. The hayrides begin at dark and continue throughout the night depending on the weather and guests. Each ride is 30 minutes long and costs $5 per person.

The Traditions of Halloween program will take place at The Castle. Cobwebs and shadows and bats – oh my! This program is for children in grades 3-5 who want to participate in a special Victorian Gothic Halloween complete with ghost stories, crafts and an overnight stay at The Castle. The Traditions of Halloween takes place on October 16-17 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Please call ahead for reservations. Cost is $50 per child.

Spend a Ghostly Afternoon with Lynne Sturtevant, author of Haunted Marietta: History and Mystery in Ohio's Oldest City, as she presents her book along with some interesting stories of Marietta on October 21 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the O'Neill Center (located at 333 Fourth St). Come prepared to tell your ghost sightings and stories. Refreshments will be served. Cost is free.

The "Walking Dead" will be dancing in the streets of Harmar Village October 23 for the second annual Zombie Walk – Thriller Dance-Off. Area dance companies will compete in a "Thriller" Dance –Off beginning at 6:00 p.m. Games, food, zombie film fest and cash prizes for "Best Zombie" costume will take place.

Find the answers to these questions and more during an afternoon of Psychic Readings at The Castle Sunday, October 24 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. This is not a lecture or group presentation. Each reading will last approximately 20 minutes. The cost is $35 per reading, per person.
