FALL FOLIAGE AT ITS' BEST IN MOHICAN COUNTRY

Loudonville, Ohio –

            With the cooler weather comes football, home-grown apples, pumpkins, crisp weather and fall foliage.  Mohican Country near Loudonville has long been a favorite to enjoy the change of season.

            "One of the best places in Ohio for fall foliage is Loudonville," explained Bob Yun, Loudonville-Mohican Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director.  "The changing season brings with it a display of incredible color at every turn on our country roads.   Acres and acres of forest and woodlots ablaze with color create a "not to be missed" experience."  How can your family enjoy autumn in Loudonville?

            Long known as the Canoe Capital of Ohio, Loudonville is home of seven canoe liveries.  "Many liveries are open daily until the end of October," Yun said.  "Trips can be from 45 minutes to 3 hours, even longer."  Don't miss a memorable stroll through Mohican State Park & Forest on 45 miles of scenic hiking trails.  A 24 mile mountain bike trail circles the Park's Clear Fork Gorge, a 300 foot deep and 1,000 foot wide National Natural Landmark.  Bring your own horse and ride the Park's 9 miles of bridle trails or explore the incredible fall foliage along the Lake Fork of the Mohican River with Two River Trails Rides.  Call 419-994-3746 for  Two Rivers info.  These are all great ways to enjoy the fall colors."

            "With the addition of Tree Frog Canopy Tours, which opened in August, visitors have another outdoor activity to enjoy the foliage literally from the treetops," Yun added.  "Guests spend 2½ hours 125 feet off the ground to get a real bird's eye view of the virgin forests near the Mohican River off Wally Road south of Loudonville."    Tree Frog Canopy Tours is open daily until the end of October.  Reservations are highly recommended with weekends being the most popular.  Some weekdays may have special rates.  Their web site, at www.TreeFrogCanopyTours.com, provides detailed info.

            To help our visitors enjoy the colorful scenery the Loudonville Mohican Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau sponsor an annual Fall Foliage Tour, Friday October 15 through Sunday October 17.  The Tour, which includes more than 20 stops, guides visitors on a self drive exploration of the best of the season. 

            The tour begins in downtown Loudonville.  "Our quaint Victorian downtown greets visitors with a streetscape of colorful awnings," Yun said.  "From shoes and appliances, to hardware and jewelry, customers are treated to small-town service rarely experienced today.  Specialty shops feature hand-crafted Amish furniture, Native American art, gifts, clothing, and jewelry, art and craft galleries and antiques, gift shops, florists, and more.  Of course, don’t forget to enjoy a bite to eat at one of our many downtown eateries.  Not all stores are open Sunday October 17." 

            The Tour continues by following the signs to Mohican State Park with stops in Clear Fork Gorge, Fire Tower, Memorial Shrine, Mohican State Park Lodge and more.   Free downloads of the Tour booklet are available at www.Loudonville-Mohican.com  in the October Area Events section and at many area merchants during the Tour.   The Covered Bridge in Mohican State Park is under repair and will not be opened until at least October 21.  So follow the detour signs on State Route 97 to the Pleasant Hill Dam and the north entrance to the Park.  

            "New this fall is the premier of a play by Mark Sebestian Jordan," Yun added.   "Louie is the story of Louis Bromfield, the world-famous writer who turned his back on fame to get back to his roots at Malabar Farm.  Louie comes to life on stage in the barn at Malabar Farm State Park.  A play in two acts, Louie features period music and elaborate set designs of Bromfield's mansion.  It features Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall's wedding site and will include historical pieces such as Bromfield's 1946 Willy's Jeep."

            The performance takes place October 8, 9,& 10 and October 15, 16 & 17 as a dinner (or lunch) theater presentation.   Audience members are encouraged to come early and explore Malabar Farm by foot or you can purchase a package that includes a self-guided tour of Louis Bromfield's mansion, "The Big House", plus a dinner (or lunch) and the performance.  Packages are $30 per person.  Tickets for the performance are available by calling M
