Old-Fashioned Holiday Festivities Warm-Up Kansas in the Winter: Take a trolley tour of holiday lights in McPherson, visit Santa on the Train in Abilene, enjoy a production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, or amaze in one million holiday lights during Topeka’s 2-mile scenic “Winter Wonderland” drive at Lake Shawnee. State Agencies Offer Helpful Technology: Kansas travelers can now access a mobile version of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT's) travel website, KanDrive (www.kandrive.org), on their smart phones. In addition, a camera network of real time views of road conditions is now set up around the state. In addition, hunters can now visit the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) website to find the locations of KDWP Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) properties through Garmin GPS and Google Earth files. Ground Has Been Broken for New Visitor Center in Central Kansas: Ground has been broken for a new visitor center at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Cottonwood Falls. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring. The $6 million cost of the new facility is split between the state and the National Park Service. The preserve is open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offers 41 miles of trails through some of Kansas’s most beautiful country. The new visitor center will complement the historic Spring Hill Ranch, already located on the preserve. For more information visit www.nps.gov/archive/tapr/home.htm.
Site for 2011 Symphony in the Flint Hills Announced: Next year’s Symphony in the Flint Hills will be held on Saturday, June 11 on a beautiful site in Wabaunsee county between Alta Vista and Alma, located off Mill Creek Scenic Drive. The site, known as the Fix Pasture, is owned by Keith Schultz. The symphony combines the splendor and expanse of the tallgrass prairie with a full symphonic production by the Kansas City Symphony.
