bablyNew York - December 1, 2010: Nestled in the Groot Drakenstein Valley, less than an hour from Cape Town, Babylonstoren is now open. Just 12 Cape Dutch style cottages dot this working farm that dates back over 300 years and whose garden is central to both the hotel and its philosophy. The original white-painted Cape Dutch buildings were built in 1692 and have been lovingly restored and incorporated into the property.

Like the kitchen in a chef's home, the garden is the heart of Babylonstoren. The garden spans eight acres with over 300 varieties of edible plants. Guests are free to walk through the gardens and pick their own herbs, fruits and vegetables. The cuisine at Babylonstoren is simple and unpretentious - the freshest ingredients guaranteeing the most delicious meals. Whenever possible, guests dine outside to fully enjoy the dramatic landscapes of the Cape Winelands.

babyloninsideSet among the historic buildings of the farm, all 12 suites are spacious and feature large duvet-covered beds and a sitting area around an open fireplace. The preferred activity is none at all, but for those who wish to explore the farm and surrounding areas, myriad activities are available: guided visits of the farm, vineyards, extensive fruit orchards and garden; swimming and canoe trips in the dam and hikes in the sloping hills and mountains that rise above the valley. A spa and yoga room are also available for ultimate relaxation.

The hills surrounding the farm have been producing some of the best grapes for hundreds of years and Babylonstoren's own wine will be ready for consumption in mid-2011.
