“The Civil War: Five
(
Planned and created by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the display, entitled “The Civil War: Five Delaware Soldiers’ Stories,” utilizes the real-life experiences of William T. Day, a native of Broadkill Hundred; William Hunter, a native of Scotland who lived in Murderkill Hundred; David W. Maull who lived in Georgetown; Samuel A. McAllister, a native of Philadelphia who served in the First Delaware Volunteer Infantry Regiment; and William Oliver, a Sussex County native who served in the United States Colored Troops. These stories help personalize and bring closer to home the fiery trials and tribulations of a war that pitted state against state and brother against brother.
In addition to the soldiers' stories, the display showcases a number of Civil War-related items from the state's collections including photographs, documents, medical equipment, weapons and accouterments, head gear, and personal objects. The display is presented in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War. A closing date has not been determined.
The First State Heritage Park Welcome Center and Galleries is located in the Delaware Public Archives building at 121 Duke of
