Whistler Vibe: Tourism Whistler's monthly media newsletter

Welcome to Tourism Whistler's media newsletter, featuring information on what's new and noteworthy, upcoming events as well as quirky and interesting Whistler story ideas.

January 2011

January in Whistler is a sacred time for powder hounds and snow junkies. The mountains and valley are covered in a blanket of fresh snow, and the air is ripe for winter adventures - whether those adventures involve skiing, snowshoeing or relaxing at the spa. To pay homage to deep winter, Whistler has a slew of events lined up including Whistler Blackcomb's aptly named Deep Winter Experience as well as the TELUS Winter Classic and WinterPRIDE.

WHAT'S NEW

Renowned B.C. artist commissioned for Olympic legacy project
Whistler's experience during the Olympics will soon be captured in an art piece located at Whistler Olympic Plaza. Last month, Susan Point's proposal for a piece entitled A Timeless Circle was selected for the $190,000 project. The Coast Salish artist was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia and currently lives on the Musqueam First Nation Reserve in Vancouver. Over the past two decades, Point has worked on numerous public art commissions, including a piece at the Vancouver International Airport. Her concept for Whistler Olympic Plaza will evoke the spirit of people coming together for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Alta Bistro: New restaurant on the block
This January a new restaurant will throw open its doors and welcome in hungry patrons looking to sample some local flavour. Alta Bistro, a small, 43-seat restaurant, will feature cooked seafood - including salmon and halibut - as well as pates, charcuteries, cheeses, quiches and braised, slow-cooked dishes. Owners Eric Griffith and Edward Dangerfield have been involved in Whistler's local food and beverage industry for years, working at some of the resort's top restaurants, and they plan to showcase their expertise through Alta Bistro's menus. The restaurant will be located on Main Street and will feature an open-concept kitchen, wine cellar, bar and dining room.

Private gondola opens on Whistler Mountain
Whistler's new luxury neighbourhood can now be accessed by its own gondola. On December 23, a new Doppelmayr gondola started running between the Kadenwood homes and the Creekside Village base. Covering a vertical rise of 228 metres (749 feet), the gondola comfortably accommodates eight people and takes six minutes to ride from one end to the other. "The convenience and proximity this private gondola affords Kadenwood residents tops off the ultimate enclave in North America's top rated ski resort," says Keith McIvor, Vice President of Sales for EcOasis Properties Limited, the development company which acquired Kadenwood from Intrawest ULC earlier this year. Kadenwood consists of 60 planned home-sites of which two-thirds have already been sold.

Bearfoot Bistro brings menu to Olympic venues
One of Whistler's top dining spots, the Bearfoot Bistro restaurant, is now moving into stands at the local Olympic venues. Owner Andrew Saint-Jacques recently signed a food and beverage contract with the Whistler Sports Legacy Society which will see his restaurant setting up shop at Whistler Olympic Park and the High Performance Centre at Cheakamus Crossing. To kick off the new deal, Saint-Jacques hosted a VIP Lounge at the 2010 Viessmann FIBT World Cup for Bobsleigh and Skeleton that was held in Whistler in late November. He plans to bring a paired down menu to the new locations, including stews, soups, pizzas and sandwiches.

Village Nightclub welcomes bar-goers with a fresh mix of music
Whistler's nightclub scene received a new addition on Dec. 24 with the soft opening of the brand-new Village Lounge
